Non-public computer network which, like the Internet, consists of a network of different computers, but is only accessible to certain users. Intranets are used in companies, for example, and in this case all members of the company have access to this network. The aim of the intranet is the communication as well as the data transfer between the different computers located in the intranet. The intranet is used for internal purposes, functions completely independently of the Internet and also offers possibilities and functions that cannot be realized through the Internet. The Internet is to be distinguished from the Extranet.
