3D printing is also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM). The term describes the three dimensional (3D) printing of goods. Therefore 3D printers are used.

Why this is interesting for a Chief Digital Officer (CDO)?
3D printing is on its way to disrupt the classic hardware companies. Sooner or later, 3D printing will take a large share of the world market. Today it is often used in very special situations. In the aircraft industry, 3D printing is used very intensively. One of the reasons is that it is cheaper to print a special hardware part than to create and deliver it in an old-fashioned way. In addition, spare parts may only be needed in very small quantities. 3D printers are ideal for this because no large ordering processes, production processes (such as changeover times, etc.) and delivery processes are required.
