An ecosystem is, in the field of digitalization, the creation of a digital world of its own. To this end, partners and customers are actively involved (see also the business model Canvas with its key partners and customer segments). This is primarily done to create a fan network of its own. Often an ecosystem is connected with a vendor lock-in. However, this circumstance does not bother the members. Either because they have become fans or because they gain other advantages of their own.

Example:
Apple has created its own ecosystem for the iPhone. Key partners here are, for example, app developers who can only create apps for the iPhone on the Apple platform. In addition, the developer tools are only designed for Apple products. The customers are fans of this ecosystem, because the value proposition promises an easy-to-use / high usability.
