Maintenance 4.0 refers to the intelligent maintenance of systems and equipment, since not only the integration, but also the ongoing care and maintenance of the equipment is a decisive factor for efficiency and productivity in the company, especially in the production area. Smart Maintenance also means that machines are not replaced by human repairs, but that they are maintained by independently recognizing the necessity before any damage occurs. Intelligent in this context means the digitization of production facilities and buildings with the aim of optimizing maintenance measures and strategies. Maintenance 4.0 is intended to improve the functionality of machines and, in particular, to reduce the probability of failure. First and foremost, systems must be networked and equipped with sensors so that they can, on the one hand, collect data that is decisive for triggering the corresponding follow-up activities and, on the other hand, communicate with other devices and issue messages.

Why this is interesting for a Chief Digital Officer (CDO)?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the drivers of digitalization. Smart devices can be found everywhere. With the help of these, e.g. productions can be even more efficient and automated. Cyber-physical systems form the basis of industry 4.0. In addition, companies can make their products smart and participate in IoT. New business models can be developed. The Chief Digital Officer (CDO) in particular is being made responsible for this, or at least that is what they are there for.
