Logistics 4.0 describes the new era of change in logistics, which is due to the change taking place within the framework of Industry 4.0 in this area. In this new generation of logistics, the connection of individual elements (processes, objects and partners) along a company’s supply and value chain stands at the forefront above all else. Networking is achieved here by using modern information and communication technologies. Communication refers primarily to the exchange of data between production equipment and systems, which also makes controlling the systems in real time possible. Examples of additional components, which enhance the logistics network, include intelligent assistant systems and devices such as self-driving vehicles/autonomous driving and also cameras that independently take over work work steps and can thereby support decision-making in the processes. This leads to a higher level of flexibility, increased transparency and thereby to a higher degree of control of the processes. The described automation of many processes, possibly resulting in a lower error rate as well as a faster process flow all contribute in ways to allow both the efficiency and the effectiveness of the entire process flow to be increased.
